TAX TIPS
Don't wait until April to start putting together what you'll need
for your return. Start now.
* IRS forms and publications. If the IRS hasn't already
sent you these materials, pick them up at your local IRS
officeor order them by phone (call 1-800-829-FORM). Don't
overlook forms such as Form 8582 (passive activity losses)
and Form 8615 (the Kddie tax).
* W-2's. Your employer must mail these to you by
January 31. If you don't get one, contact your employer. When
you receive your W-2, check it for accuracy. If it's wrong, get it
corrected immediately.
*1099 information returns. These, too should be mailed
to you by January 31. You should get 1099's from any persons,
companies, banks, financial institutions, etc., who have paid
you interest, dividends, freelance income, etc., during the year
for which you're filing. Again, double-check for accuracy and
get all mistakes corrected.
* Deduction data. Sort out your checks, credit card
statements, paid invoices, bills, etc., by category--e.g., medical
expences, charitable donations, travel and entertainment and
any other items you need for your tax return.
