How To Avoid IRS Trouble
|
Don't mail your return until you've double-checked everything.
Don't forget to:
* Include your name, address and Social Security number on
the first page of your return. If you use the IRS preaddressed label, correct any wrong information.
* Write your name and Social Security number on every page
you send to the IRS.
* Attach a copy B of your W-2 Form (and any 1099 if tax was
withheld).
* Sign and date the return. (Both spouses must sign a joint
return).
* Staple your check or money order to the return. Don't forget
to sign the check and write on it your Social Security number, the form number and the tax year.
* Copy the return for your own records.
* Include every form and related schedule.
* Recheck arithmetic.
* Address the return to the Internal Revenue Service in your
state. Some tax professionals believe that the preaddressed envelope that comes with your return contains computer codes that mark the return for an audit. However, other experts say that using the IRS envelope will speed up your refund check.
* Mail the return on or before April 15. Use stamps--not sn
office postage meter, because the IRS won't accept this as proof if there is any doubt as to when your return was actually filed. Or use a designated private delivery service. |
