Discriminant Function

(DIF) System Scores

The IRS frequently uses a computerized program to determine the
potential of a return for examination. Based on IRS experience in
examining other returns, the discriminant function (DIF) system scores
are assigned to returns as they are processed. Those containing higher
potential for a tax adjustment are considered for examination.
